Perhaps you have hired a
"Children's Entertainer"
for your kids party and thought
I could do that
But don't know how to begin

"So Where do you
start?"
Well first of all realise that
entertaining children is not easy. Do not be fooled by all the happy
smiles.
A good entertainer makes everything look easy
and he is having fun at the same time but the reality is he is working very,
very hard on your behalf to ensure that your child has a great party.
Also remember that entertainers are NOT
all the same. There are as many bad ones as there are good ones.

Here are my Top Ten Tips to Becoming a
Successful Children's Entertainer
It may sound
obvious but you do
need to have a love for entertaining and also a love of working with
children. Children can detect a phony right away so don't try
to bluff your way through a show. Trust me you will regret it.
A
good way to learn whether or not you are suited to work with children
is to perhaps offer to baby sit for a friend or family member. This
way you will quickly learn children's humour and is a great way of finding
out what they like, what makes them laugh etc.
Also
do
volunteer work for a local youth organisation such as the Scouts or a church
group. I was a Sunday School Teacher for many years and found
interacting with children to be very natural especially when it came to the
Children's Christmas Shows and summer trips.
Okay
so you find that you like working with children and they like you but you
still need a show so.....
First
watch
as many children's entertainers as you can to see the variety of styles and
decide where you see yourself fitting in.
If
you see an entertainer that you particularly like and feel his style suits
you then ask that entertainer if he will help you. Having
a mentor is invaluable to help you avoid mistakes. He can also help
with greatly with the business side of things.
It
is hard to gain experience in being a children's entertainer. You need
a show and you need to perform it many times to iron out problems and to
improve your entertaining skills. Accept the fact that not everyone is
suited to entertaining children. It is a tough audience, much tougher
than entertaining adults. Just ask anyone who has done both.
Consider
taking
drama and/or acting lessons to build upon your natural entertaining
skills. Experience the stage fright which affects everyone.
Learn how to cope with your fear and realise that even seasoned actors
experience "stage fright". At this stage you want to build
your confidence to stand in front of an audience.
Next
you need to create your own show routine. What you do will depend on
the skills you already have. For example many magicians perform magic
shows for children. If this appeals to you you need to learn magic and
the best way is to join a magic club to perfect your magic tricks.
Remember that there are different kinds of magic and children's magic is
only one branch of magic. Alternatively You might be good at
organising children's games and this could form the bases of your
show. Then again you might be good at balloon modeling and this could
be your starting point. Start by perfecting a fifteen minute
performance. You can then, at a later stage, build your act up to
thirty minutes and then one hour.
When
you feel confident, practice your routine in front of a live
audience say a small
group of children which could be your own children or friends and
family. Start with the easy age group ie five and six year olds.
If that goes well start offering your services as a children's entertainer
at fetes, birthday parties, basically anywhere where children need to be
entertained, but again restrict the length of your show to no more than 30
minutes and that way you always (hopefully) leave your audience wanting
more. This will help to build your confidence.
If you have got this far and are serious about becoming a children's
entertainer then you might as well be rewarded for your troubles. The
props you use are not cheap. likewise most entertainers use music and good
music systems cost money. You will need to be properly insured and
have your equipment PAT Certified and a good entertainer always volunteers
to be CRB checked. This all costs money so at the end of the whole
process you should consider charging a fee to pay your expenses.
Remember
to be successful in show business you
not only need a great show but you must always
make sure that you attend to the business side
of things.
