"Mr Giggles Party Checklist"To ensure a stress free kids party is easy it just takes a little preparation. Use this Party Planner and you cannot go wrong and remember to involve your child from the very beginning. The older the child the more essential this is. Tick the box when you have done the activity. 4-6 weeks before your party q Sit down with your child and choose a party theme for the party. q Create the guest list. The guests will depend on the age of your child. Age four and under will largely consist of friends from mother and toddler groups, nurseries and relatives. School age children five year old and above will have school friends and some special relatives. q Select the party date and time. Parties are generally 1 hour for four years and under to 2 hours for older children. Don’t be tempted to go longer. Always leave the children wanting more. q If hiring a children's party entertainer select one who will fit in with your party theme eg a clown for a circus theme, a pirate for a swashbuckling pirate theme, wizard for a Harry Potter theme etc. Also make sure that the entertainer is suitable for the age group concerned and remember that good entertainers have a loyal following and tend to booked fairly far in advance so to avoid disappointment and get the time you want get in early. q Depending on the number of children invited and their age you may wish to hire a hall or other venue. This is not essential and Mr Giggles has had many, many great parties at a child’s home and this is highly recommended for the younger child. 3-4 weeks before your partyq Order party supplies, decorations, party favours, to fit in with the theme chose. Also supplies for activities and prizes for games. Be sure to order sufficient tableware for the children and any adults that may attend. q Send the invitations as soon as possible in case another child in your child’s class is planning a party on the same day otherwise you may have to change your party date to accommodate special friends. It is essential to ask guests to RSVP to get an estimate of how many children to expect and follow up with those who have not replied no later than the week before the party. 2-3 weeks before your partyq Decide with your child on activities and games to play. Consider the age of the children and plan games and activities accordingly. Plan for more games than you think you will need in case the activities don’t last as long as you expect. Experience says that they won’t! You will find some suggestions on my web site. q If you have hired a professional children’s entertainer for the duration of the party then he should take care of this aspect of the party making life easy for you. Mr Giggles recommends avoiding elimination games as for those children who are out the party can be boring. q Plan your food menu keeping food and drink simple and appropriate to the theme. See my suggestions on my web site. q Arrange for help on the party day from friends or relatives. They in turn can assist you when it is their child’s big day 1 week before the party q Buy the cake from a supermarket/cake decorator if you are not baking your own. Mr Giggles knows the best places to purchase cakes so if you are unsure ask his advice. Otherwise bake your own cake, again let your child help, and freeze it. q Make any other foods that can be made ahead of time and store foods in the freezer. q Write out a final schedule of activities for the party. q Confirm any orders placed for the cake and/or party supplies. q Good entertainers always write to a parent acknowledging the details of the party so that if there is any misunderstanding they can be rectified before the big comes arrives. If you have not received an acknowledgement contact your entertainer to make sure that he is coming! q Likewise you should have received confirmation when hiring a hall. If you have not contact the hirers to ensure that everything is still all right. 2-3 days before the party q Buy remaining food for the party. q Buy film for your camera and/or videotape. q Check batteries for the camera and/or camcorder. q Get an exact guest count. Call those who haven't responded. q Arrange to have balloons filled with helium to pick up the day of the party. It is fun to have each guest go home with a balloon. 1 day before the party q Finish decorating the cake, or pick up the cake from the bakers. q Make sure you have plenty of candles and matches. You would be amazed how many parents overlook matches. q If purchasing helium-filled balloons collect them from the shop or have them delivered as inflated balloons can take up a lot of space. q Child-proof the party area and put away any prized possessions for your own sanity and relaxation. q Decorate indoor rooms if possible again with the help of you child and siblings. q Depending on the weather consider putting up gazebos and decorating any outdoor areas otherwise save outdoor decorating for the day of the party. q Prepare food that can be made ahead of time. q Contact your entertainer especially if you have not used him/her before. Yippee it's Party day q Prepare foods and drinks that could not be made ahead of time. q Be aware that some guests always arrive before the time expected so be ready before the appointed hour. q Leave dressing up the birthday child in his/her party clothes until just before the party especially if it is a theme costume. q Please ensure that you take lots of pictures and videos to commemorate this special day. Birthdays are so special and great to look back on in the days, months and years ahead.
