Clowns – beware that some young children can find clowns frightening.   Unless clowns also perform magic tricks or have other skills today’s children can easily become bored.

Magicians – most young children are thrilled by a little magic.   For older children choose a magician who is a member of the Magic Circle and takes his art seriously.

Face Painters – face painting takes time so it’s helpful to have a professional face painter at work while other activities are going on.   Face painters will ensure all paints used are hypo-allergenic and non-toxic.

Balloon Modelling – balloon modelling isn’t enough on its own, but most children are thrilled to go home with a balloon model quickly made by an entertainer towards the end of the party.

General Entertainer – check exactly what you are getting and for how long.  The best entertainers offer prizes, puns and ditties, jokes, magic, songs and a rabbit or two.

Bouncy Castles/ Ball Pool – great fun and good value, these need supervision and a large garden space.   They are an excellent idea if your expecting lots of children, but may be better in an activity centre than at home.

Disco – discos seem to appeal mainly to older girls.   Many will relish the chance to dress up and dance.

Older Kids – Pyjama Party – a party in PJs is great fun and usually only includes small numbers.   Slumber parties usually involve a decent video, take away pizza or other easy party food and games.   Storytelling can go down well.   Sleeping bags and the obligatory midnight feast add to the fun and it’s a good cheap option."
